Lost For Words..

I was spending my time in the doldrums
I was caught in the cauldron of hate
I felt persecuted and paralyzed
I thought that everything else would just wait
While you are wasting your time on your enemies
Engulfed in a fever of spite
Beyond your tunnel vision reality fades
Like shadows into the night

To martyr yourself to caution
Is not going to help at all
Because there'll be no safety in numbers
When the Right One walks out of the door

Can you see your days blighted by darkness?
Is it true you beat your fists on the floor?
Stuck in a world of isolation
While ivy grows over the door

So I open my door to my enemies
And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
But they tell me to please go fuck myself
You know you just can't win

(Pink Floyd- The Division Bell)

Gurgaon Condominium living is convenient and from what I gather, pretty aspirational too. ( It’s most liberating to be holed into 1000 sq ft houses, amidst a complete concrete jungle?) Basic necessities are taken care of, you can isolate yourself or choose to participate in all the insignificant social activities that take place. If you’re as lucky as I am, you may actually find a genuine friend. But for most – you could take me to court for this- its secure, mind free, sterile though a trifle expensive. However, for the last 7 months- the jungle has taken slightly more realistic dimensions- there are 5 monkeys that have taken over the complex.

TAKEN OVER. Scrounge for food in each of the 400+ flats’ kitchens, have learnt to slide open the doors from the outside, learnt to ignore the poisonous food laid out in an effort to trap them and lately after having declared to the world their own state of well being- have even reproduced, their snarling has acquired a completely new menacing message. So I waited for ‘them’ to do something- ( THEM… you know- them, the system, the people in authority, the President). Mr. Gupta, the president, is a geriatric man with babu ancestry and took action by sending a circular: ‘People are requested not to make eye contact with the monkeys, please keep a toy snake in your house and use it to scare monkeys when they come into your house’. So I timidly tried to explain to my 3 year old that she could not ‘make eye contact’- trying not to make her permanently scarred/scared of monkeys. ( This new age parenting - balancing approach is tricky & testing. )

So I took matters in my hand (occupational hazard) and one Saturday-marched to the tiny Condominium Association Office. I can assure you I let Guptajee have it- I have journalist friends I threatened, we will not pay maintenance- I said, you are all incompetent fools- I said, mere chote bachhe hain-kaat liya to- I said, will you repay me for the vase that they broke on their last visit-I said, Dad pulled his back while shooing away a monkey- I said. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I said. Pretty Good , would you say? I had personal interest and also the conscience to know that I needed to help the old man, who feared the wrath of Maneka Gandhi. I took away the numbers of the relevant contact people in Wildlife Ministry , Forest Officials and marched home. Over a good drink with some friends that night, I narrated the incident. Will you support me – I asked? Yes Of Course. Damn Good-Bhavna they said. We admire you- they said, you have chosen not to comment from the sidelines. Good Work they said . We will shoo these monkeys out together. Its our safety. BTW- It gave me a huge sense of purpose, more meaning ( don’t laugh- I swear, it did-I am really anticipating that they will attack my children next). Monday morning- I misplaced the number. Work was damn busy that week. Then the economic meltdown happened. Monkey mania can take a back seat, my job is under threat here. Did I say ‘sense of purpose’?

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH- we say. Security we say. Fire the Damn politicians – we say. Light candles we say. United in love we say. Bomb the neighbors – we say. Carry out genocide – we say. Wipe them out – we say. The icons of India- we say. The incompetent should be fired- we say. Heads should roll we say. Held Hostages in our own country- we say. Hand over the guilty- we say. Politicians should be accountable- we say. Dont vote- we say. Don’t pay taxes – we say. We need a man of action – we say. Get Modi – we say. Some of the innocent will go with the perpetrators – we say. So WHAT – we say….

I cant face myself in the mirror anymore- the happy , cheery me is replaced by this incompetent, persecuted, paralysed , guilty, fearful, insecure, scared and angry person- but mostly full of derision & contempt. I shed tears some of sadness for the tragedy that this nation has witnessed- but mostly for me…for being the worst kind of citizen that this country has produced. For having the lowest self esteem that I have had for years. For not bothering to get my voter card made. For having a driving license without undergoing the test. For thinking that I contribute by working in a cushy job. For feeling that I cant make a difference. For telling my children that its better to become a Doctor rather than a soldier. For asking for accountability rather than being accountable. For never having taken an interest in the way that the political system runs in this country coz it wasn’t worth it. For thinking I am doing my bit by lighting the candle or contributing some miserly amount. For never having worked for social causes coz I was too busy wrapped up in my comfort zone. For still wondering how I can make a difference.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

True Bhavna, completely relate to u'r feelings. The carnage of 26/11 has evoked only one feeling- how helpless and incometentent we are as citizens, for reasons quoted and many many more!! We look for answers playing the blame game, but what is it that we as individuals are striving to do, to make a small change in the microcosm of which we are a part!!Actions speak louder than words....and it's time to stop thinking and start acting...

Each drop adds to the ocean. You can make the difference if you think hard enough. Don't let the fight leave you.
P.S:Erm, the monkeys plucked all the gerboras and winter flowers and have strewn them around in my balcony last evening.
It's a jungle out here I'm telling you. Guptajeee, hai hai ,simianjee hai hai!

ACT!ACT!ACT!

Thats what you are saying! I do hope for Gods sake that we get it this time. The candle marches, the spitiing on politicians is really not getting us anywhere at all, except for the funny visual forwards on these marches and the obnoxius (some funny) placards.

People! LETS DO SOMETHING! Thanks Bhavna for the Rude and timely awakening!

Pretty damn true and quite on the spot. looking at myself has actually become quite difficult. But you know what, what can I do. how do i contribute? short of standing for elections myself, or entering exams for beauracracy, i really dont see an option.
I just wish, there were forums for us to contribute to the democracy that we call ourselves to be.

Susmita-We blame the politicians for apathy. We are the perpetrators of this apathy. For eg- how many of us know abt the RTI act and try to invoke it even for day to day affairs?
Sudha- You woe for the flowers, I asked Guptajee- the next u know they will bite the little children. He looked at me earnestly and said' Madam I can assure you they wont'. I think he has formed some sort of a collaboration with them. Its easier to hold negotiating talks with them than me?? ( Jai Kali ma)
Neha & Chaitali: we can start doing little things. Like not bribing even small time officials for everyday affairs, like visting RTOs for licenses, like participating in even local RWAs. Small drops..but its about the signals.
Chaitali- thanks for visiting & leaving a comment. Take heart-one of the forums I have come across is "YOUTH FOR EQUALITY' which is now acquiring more political dimensions. ( which is good). Let me find out abt them & get back to you

From the Sapien last week to the Simian this week... your life seems to be too exciting Bhavna...

Finally I see a connect... did what they did, the terrorists seem to have managed to scare the monkeys out of their natural habitats - the Lok Sabha and the Mantralaya... so no wonder they have adopted Wellington...

Do any of these guys resemble the Patils or the Deshmukhs? Ramu and Riteish may be somewhere around too...

In Chandigarh the Rhesus monkeys would come in large groups from the PGI and the virtually took over the entire sector with the heavy male monkeys leading the parade , shaking the Mango tree till most of the unripe fruit fell off. They got pretty mad at us if tried to shoo them away with gestures or by brandishing sticks, they did bite a few people and can have Rabies. The antidote or the monkey repellent was the Langur, funny how this monkey cannot stand being around their cousin the Langur, no kidding.

It is human nature to believe that shit would happen to someone else and we take refuge in our own cocoons and comfort, after creating some fuss for a while. The terror attacks would soon be a history and would be forgotten. They say that God gave us spirituality and the Devil interfered and said that we organize it and call it religion. Have you seen the movie Jesus Camp.

Keep up the good work Bhavna, I sure can relate to Pink Floyd and Bob Marley, they possess the power to bring about a Change.

It's hard to describe the agony all of us went through over this. The Dean of my school sent a small note "I can’t begin to express my own personal agony, for the people who died, those who were trapped and didn’t know when or if they would ever get out, for everyone in India who have seen growth and development with pride but now have to take the consequences of cruel terrorism into account." Over the last few weeks those words keep echoing in my head, especially the last few ones - the attacks hit us where it hurts the most - our pride. It attacked that chip on our shoulder - that we are a democracy (and China isn't), that our education system produces the best doctors, engineers ..., that we are growing on our own despite being a nation of a billion people....

What are we going to do about it? What kind of country do we envision we will hand over to our kids ? I believe the answer to this is in your comment "..for being the worst kind of citizen that this country has produced". I saw my sister go through similar emotions a few months back during the US elections, when she voted in the elections for the first time and reflected back that she had never done that back home. One reason why she went out to vote - her 3 year old knew who McCain & Obama were as they had been told about the upcoming election day in playschool.

I observed with amusement & irony as I saw how passionate Ritu & her friend became about the elections & Obama - signing up as volunteers for his campaign and making phone calls, buying bumper stickers and contributing money - even though they were not eligible to vote in the US. Ironical - as like most Indians - both of them wear their patriotism to India on the sleeve, but probably never voted in India.

Honestly - it's not funny that so many times we found out that it was local election day when we went to a bar in Delhi and were told it was a dry day due to the elections.

The point is not that to focus on that we are bad citizens - but what do we do now? As we've probably studied in a B-School course - if you have power & don't wield it, it will be taken away. We've not used out powers as democratic citizens - and have lost that to politicians and bureaucrats. It's not just about voting in the elections - but becoming active citizens & members of the community we live in and creating an India where life does not mean - growing up - get into career du jour - get married - have kids and live happily ever after - with no stress on what our responsibilities are as a citizens, but making sure that being a responsible citizen is taught & stressed at every stage in life. We just need to remember - “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.”

I think this is one of the biggest challenges which has been thrown to our generation - and let's get our heads together on what we can do about this.

As my favorite Saint - St. Bono would say

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should

Ravi- u are right, there is a definite Patil out there, Senior & Junior Deshmukhjee are also blatantly misusing the power- just on Saturday- they threatened my hubby through the glass door. Serves him right for working through a Saturday,
Vivek- arre Baba woh Chandigarh ke monkeys, btw- they tried the langur here but as Sunny would say PHAIL!Bahut hi issmart hain hey Wellington ke bandar ,
Rohit- thanks for posting on my blog & I can feel the anger and the frustration. You have evoked a lot of thought - Indians helping in Obama's campaign? My only hope is that this time I sense a responsible anger in people- a need to do something. After all the public campaigns did help with the Priyadarshini Mattoo case. Also- with few of the state election results have clearly shown that even the common voter is more interested in performance rather than all this bickering. I believe that the change will happen- albeit slowly. We may of course never equal the US in some ways but each person is definitely questioning their own contribution to the state of our nation.

cheers!
